On the road again... Took the ever popular 56 west route today for a 8.26 mile jaunt in 77 minutes and 2 seconds.
Got back to school for a couple of semi-final games for our boys. First, soccer takes out San Dieguito 2-0 for a CIF final rematch with Saints. On the hardwood, our hoop team jumped out to a big lead over Saints but lost it in the 3rd qtr only to rebound with a 65-61 win. Kudos to a huge night for Brandon Michel who is our best thief but was dropping everything, ending up with 25 points to lead all scorers!
The students of Cathedral continue to amaze me! The students of the Interact Club are putting together a concert to raise money for charity and I recently found that at least a portion of what is raised will go to my fundraising efforts! Here is the story from the El Cid and I will give updates for details as I learn them.

Cool day down at Mission Bay today. My throat is starting to get sore and my glands are swelling but the run started off great! At mile 6 my stomach cramped but our Angels, Natalie & Amanda carried me through the next 2.6 miles. 8.62 miles in 79 minutes which is my quickest long run of the year, so I can't be upset!
I am in need of comments & encouragement! To be honest, I'm doing OK right now but I know that down the road I will be struggling at times, so I am going to keep asking for them to keep the momentum rolling strong. Thank you in advance for anything and everything you do to help me accomplish this goal. I know many are keeping my parents & I in their prayers and I am very grateful for that!
Where do I go for real inspiration outside of my parents... D-Rock, of course! Found another fantastic article on Derek Thomas that was in the North County Times. Luckily someone put it up on our bulletin board in the faculty room at work, otherwise I might have missed it! Anyway, here is the web version for your reading enjoyment.

What a beautiful day for a run on the beach! I had the pleasure of running in the 2nd annual Teen Driving Safety 5K at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas this morning. We ran north on the beach and the tide got a little high but some wet feet were survived! I ran the course twice to get some miles in (7.09) in about 69 minutes.
They had a few speakers that were good reminding us all that using your phone while driving in ANY WAY is dangerous and just a couple of seconds can make all the difference when we are traveling at speed. The driving while intoxicated is just such an obvious thing now that I can't understand how it happens but unfortunately it does.
I found a short video from the inaugural event on YouTube to get a glimpse. The last speaker, I believe is name was Victor, was pretty powerful. He has stepped up his game as a speaker from this video & his strength in overcoming his difficulties is very inspiring. I'll put up this year's video if it gets posted in the near future.

Time to get some more grading done! A teacher's job never stops! Take care, enjoy your weekend!
Before I go, a Don's sports update: Boys soccer advance to the semis by defeating West hills 2-0 last night. Boys Hoop crushed Olympian 90-43 to move on to the semis. Girls soccer dismantled Monte Vista 7-0 with Betsy Muirhead scoring a hat trick! On to the semis for them! Girls hoop played tonight at Valley Center and what a barn burner it was! They were down by as many as 13 I believe and down by 8 at the half but rallied back to push the game to overtime where they won on a last second jumper by Wendy Anae at the elbow! What an exciting game! On to the semis! ROLL DONS!

A bit tired as I'm not getting enough sleep again! All my fault but I need to change that before I get sick again! Today was much better on the running scene. Ribs felt much better but legs are getting tired, especially the quads. Maybe the 13 mile bike ride wasn't the best thing for me to do on my day off! ;)
Ran the 56 west run today but made it fairly short, 7.12 miles in 64 minutes & 50 seconds. Need some good sleep tonight! I'll put one more picture I took on my bike ride Wednesday. Both Dons teams won tonight: Soccer 2-0 over West Hills & Hoop 90-43 over Olympian. Roll Dons!
This is a shot of downtown from Crown Point. Pretty clear day but there was a little bit of smog!
Time for bed! I wish you all a wonderful weekend and do something nice for someone you run into!

Today was one of my least favorite runs due to my ribs not making it pleasant at all! It was pretty slow going and I decided to take a new route. I took Del Mar Heights Rd. east to Carmel Valley north and ran all the way to Camino Del Sur & back for 7.31 miles in 70 minutes and 47 seconds. I really hope to get these ribs in better shape soon or I may have to break down and go to the Dr.
Took a few pictures on my bike ride yesterday. This is east Mission Bay looking out over Ski Beach on the left and Fiesta Island on the right. Taken from the Ingram bridge right by Sea World. It was a great day for a bike ride!
Time for a quote from the man on the C note, Ben Franklin:

Today was my day off so I went and rode my bike on the same path that I ran on Sunday to see what my mileage actually was! I wanted to simulate a 1/2 marathon and it turns out I was pretty darn close: 13.06 miles! Using some math I figured out (estimates of course) that I burned appx. 1586 calories, ran at about 9:38 pace and took about 126 minutes.
My new total is, (drum roll please Mr. Peart!): 302.64 miles!!!! That puts me at just over 15% of the miles needed to accomplish my goal. Come quite a way but still so far to go! Please keep up the comments and share this with others. I need the word to be spread & I need to do that more than anyone as I am not a good self promoter!
I will get pictures up here that I took on my bike ride to show the beautiful Mission Bay off to all our friends around the country.
Love you Mom & Day <3
More running tomorrow! Talk to you then...

February 21st, Tuesday
Back to school after a long weekend is always tough! Well, I did manage to run after a long day of turning students away who wanted to turn in their Ambassador applications late! I'll have to go into that sometime but it is the best and worst part of my year.
So, ran the 56 west to Carmel Creek bridge and return for 7.95 miles in 76 minutes & 31 seconds. Then worked the scoreboard for the Dons opening round crushing of Brawley 88 - 43. I think the boys only led by 12 at the half. They obviously picked it up in the 2nd half & will play again on Friday which looks to be a triple header with both soccer teams playing as well. 3, 5, & 7pm! Roll Dons!
On a beer note, I had the opportunity to finally try Pliny the Younger, side by side with the Elder at a benefit at BLAH! (They were just tasters so I don't consider that cheating! :) Wow, it almost lived up to all the hype, what a great couple of beers. Also tried Ballast Point Barmy Ale for the 1st time too, that was a big surprise in a great way, although I should never be surprised by the awesomeness that keeps flowing out of BP! If you have never been, you have to go soon! Great stuff! 21 or older please! ;)
Well, there are many places and ideas that came together to make me want to do this crazy journey and 1 of them is my favorite band, RUSH. They put out 2 new songs about a year & 1/2 to 2 years ago and one is called Caravan. Part of the chorus goes "I can't stop thinking BIG, I can't stop thinking BIG, In a world where I feel so small, I can't stop thinking BIG!" If this wasn't thinking BIG enough, I don't know what to tell ya!
In case you don't know my extended goal, I really want to reach the 2112 mark as Rush had a very pivotal album by that name in their early career and I don't think I'm going to see that year & if I do, I doubt I'll be running 2112 yards much less miles! So for your enjoyment, RUSH:

Here is this week's video: http://youtu.be/euOV-VS6Yq0
Ran 6.91 miles in 63 minutes & 27 seconds @ Lake Murray. It was a beautiful day for a run even if my legs were tired from yesterday. I will have an accurate total up after I find out what my mileage was on Sunday. Should be around 13 somewhere. The 300 mile mark is getting close and I am looking forward to getting over this next hurdle! That would put 3 behind me and 1 fewer ahead. I am getting more determined as time goes by but I must keep doing the little things that have got me this far.
I will leave you with a last quote from Rough Rider, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and 26th President, Teddy Roosevelt to finish up President's Day:
"No man is worth his salt who is not ready at all times to risk his well-being, to risk his body, to risk his life, in a great cause."
Not risking my life, but my well-being and my body... possibly! Take care all!

I have flown by Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, and am now approaching Phoenix (as the crow flies). Crazy to think about...

February 19th, Sunday
Today I decided to do a long run to make sure I could finish the SD 1/2 with my ribs. I knew my batteries were going on my Garmin but I left my charged ones at school so I hoped that the 2 bars would hold out. The last time I looked at it when it was still working was 11.4 miles. I'm guessing it was over 13 but I can't be sure as I ran out of juice! :( I will not be counting this run yet. I plan on taking my bike on the same route on my next day off to get the official mileage and then I will add it to my total. Not sure what I will do with the time but might just use the average for my longest run as it will be very close.
A bummer but not the end of the world. At least I know I can handle the ribs on a long run. :) I forgot to do my video but I'm sure that is good news for some of you! ;) Maybe tomorrow...
For my President's quote today, I will be going to JFK. This quote is very appropriate for this endeavor that I am on and it is something I think about daily!
"Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly"
With a lot of ice & stretching, I am keeping it together but I would love to hear from you all with some words of encouragement. It will help me out tremendously! Share, encourage, donate!

Happy President's Day weekend everyone! Today I tagged along with the distance kids from the CCHS Track team on their 1st day of practice as one of their coaches couldn't make it for their run. We ran at San Elijo Lagoon just north of Solana Beach. 7.07 miles in 66 minutes & 31 seconds. Picture below is of the kids. They are awesome & I predict a great season ahead. Come check them out if you have a chance! We tried a video but you couldn't make out a word they said! Lol!

Day off was good both JV hoop teams won and my legs got some rest. Problem is my cough is still hanging around and my rib cage is very painful from a coughing fit. Must have done some cartilage/muscle damage. Today's run was tough but I managed to get 7.12 miles in 66 minutes & 34 seconds. Just keep praying I can get through this! I have now run a total of over 10 marathons in about a month & 1/2. Not too shabby!
We had an in-service day on Friday at school as we are going 1 to 1 next year with iPads for every student. Learned a few things that I'm putting into practice already. Here's the article from the UT this past week:

Finally got my dad's last Christmas present but I can't tell you what it is until I give it to him. He will like it though!
Again, I would love to have some running/biking company if any of you are interested. I also still need help spreading the word. I have advertising material if anyone has a place it can go, please let me know. Thanks for all the support and I hope you can keep me going for a few more months. I definitely need your help!

Wow, what a rough run today was! Rain, cold wind, and sore me were not a good combo, but I made it 6.35 miles in 59 minutes & 6 seconds. Soaked to the bone but well worth the effort! I'm taking the day off Thursday to recoop and work a few hoop games. 8 days in a row is a bit much but I feel good about the progress I have made.
Dons Board meeting tonight after watching some of the Dons soccer game where they beat up on Pt. Loma 4-0! Robby Gomez had a goal. Good luck in the playoffs Dons!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!! Today I ran 8.3 miles & my buddy Dan came along for a lot of it. Now officially over the 1/8th mark!!! We then watched senior night for the lady Dons soccer team vs. defending state champs Coronado and they won on a Betsy Muirhead goal, 1-0! Great game ladies!!!!
After getting home, my brother stopped by as he got his new car today! It's a Fisker Karma electric car that is pretty incredible. Got a quick ride, what a fun car! He's gonna have a blast with this!
This is day 7 in a row and my body is definitely feeling it! 52.86 miles in one week! One more day then a day off for basketball games! Working the clock.
Hope you all had a great Valentine Day! Strange how we celebrate the day a man was beheaded for illegally marrying a bunch of people! :) Keep the support coming please! The comments have been few and far between of late!

Today was my 1st real wet run. It was misting when I started out but about a mile in it started to come down a bit. Stopped raining about mile 3 but was pretty much drenched by then. 6.6 miles in 63 minutes.
Went to the 1st annual Derek Thomas Rugby Tourney yesterday after seeing this great piece on the news the night before. He is simply an amazing young man who we can all learn something from when it comes to staying positive!
http://www.10news.com/video/30440722/index.html
I also want to get some great presidential quotes rolling this week. This one from Thomas Jefferson fits well with D-Rock's story I think.
Hope you and your family are safe and enjoying your time together & if you aren't together, don't forget to use that thing that you can't seem to go anywhere without, actually make a call with it and tell your family members you love them!

Hi again! Well, we had another successful weekend. Today I added 7.11 miles in 65 minutes & 14 seconds @ Lake Murray! Nice weather to run in the afternoon as I like it on the cool side! Your weekly video starring yours truly is above.
I went up to school today to see the final of the Derek Thomas Rugby Tournament. Should be a fun annual event so watch for it next year!
Hope you all had a safe and fun weekend! Remember to leave a comment as the encouragement will help me and when you help someone else, you also help yourself!

Hi all! Glad I'm not back east right now, looks down right chilly! Yesterday did a quick 4.6 miles before the basketball games that I was working at school. Today I ran the east (Ski) Mission Bay with a little extra totaling 10.9 miles in 102 minutes and 5 seconds. I am finally back ahead of schedule! Best total miles for a single week so far!
Stats for the week & Totals:
Miles:
Week 6: 47.38 Total: 232.17 Pace to get 2012: 230.89
Time:
Week 6: 7:36:39 Total: 37:08:25
Ave Mile:
Week 6: 9:38 Total: 9:36
Calories Burned:
Week 6: 5964 Total: 28,768
Have a great Saturday night!
I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt for spartan races and I found this video that is an ad for them but I liked the fact that Muhammad Ali is featured in it as he is one of the 2 most famous people fighting Parkinson's. Never ran one of these races so I am not advocating them, just liked the motivational video. They do look interesting though... maybe next year! Enjoy!

Crashed early last night and didn't have a chance to get this written! So many obligations! lol Ran 8.55 miles in 83 minutes 34 seconds. Not a bad run actually, a little warm but I know my east coast people would be very upset if I were to complain about 76 degree weather in Feb!
I know that I will be running with my friend Katie today who is a fellow XC coach at school. Will be good to have company for a change! Probably will be a short one as I plan to do at least 10 on Sat.
Getting ready for playoffs for Hoop & Soccer among other sports (H2O Polo, Roller Hockey, Wrestling) at school. Best of luck to all our Don's athletes!
Today I finally have a link to the story they did on CCTV about this crazy run I'm doing. Considering the short amount of time they put this together in, I was very impressed with the final product! Thank you Catelyn Merrill and the rest of the CCTV crew for doing such a wonderful job! It is the lead story so you won't have to watch it all if you don't want to do so! Enjoy!

6.8 miles today in 64 minutes & 24 seconds. Pretty mundane run until a pick up truck almost ran me down. Almost seemed like the driver was just trying to scare me (he was successful!) but can't be sure. I hopped out of the bike lane onto the sidewalk faster than I thought I could so at least I was paying attention.
Had a good rest yesterday as I had to work basketball games, really only one as Mission Bay doesn't have a JV girls team. Very sad! Feeling fairly good but wish this chest congestion would leave me for at least the next 11 months!
Getting ready for next year's Ambassador selections. A long process that is one of the toughest jobs I have at our school. I have had to cut 67% of the applicants the last 2 years! Some great kids don't make it and I have to be the one to do the dirty work! AUGH!
Here is a video I found to keep thinking about how you can do anything you put your mind to do:

Way past my bed time so I will finish this later but need to mention that I hit the 10% mark today! Ran 9.81 miles in 97 minutes & 20 seconds. My shuffle was out of juice so went with no music & had a lot of time to think about the math so I figured out how far I need to go and I now stand at 201.31 miles!
Had a piece of good luck (at least I thought it was!) Where the 56 bike path goes under Carmel Country Rd. there is a floodway that we call the "Swamp" because it always has a green covering and is usually very still. On my way back to school as I ran thru the part that floods after a rain, I saw a little turtle scurrying across the side walk and he started to move when he heard me coming! He was awesome and I will be looking for him again!
Toward the end of the run today, I was feeling very tired coming up Carmel Valley Rd. on mile 9 and then a car honked and someone shouted "Mr. Rickling!" out of the window. I couldn't quite make out who it was but it definitely gave me the lift I needed! I got another honk before I turned for home too! It may not seem like much, but it came at the perfect time! It's just like saying something nice to someone as you pass them by, you just never know when they really need it & it might just be at the perfect time! :) Enjoy this movie about Kindness:

February 5th, Superbowl Sunday
Today went well, 6.72 miles in 64 minutes & 22 seconds around Lake Murray. I even got to see my old friend Vince from Uni who was coaching his daughter's softball team at the fields. Go Navajo Bobbysox!
I also went to Road Runner Sports to get some shoes, socks, gu, etc. Great place to go if you ever need running shoes or gear off Convoy south of the 52.
Well, Eli won again but I am at least happy for Justin Tuck! We just watched many people who are considered heroes play a game. Today, I want you all to read about a TRUE HERO! Someone who has done things that most of us would not have the courage, persistence, or fortitude to do, day in and day out when life is at its most difficult! Derek Thomas is one of my heroes and makes my running seem easy to do in comparison to what he has faced and continues to face everyday! Keep up the great work D-Rock! I can only hope to inspire a fraction of the people that you have! MUST READ!!!!!

Back by popular demand (lmao!) I made a new video in front of the Information Center on Mission Bay after my run today. 8.58 miles in 86 minutes & 21 seconds. I think my slowest run to date but for only my 3rd run after coming back from the flu, I'm just happy to get some distance in.
I am definitely upping my ACS goal as there have been so many generous people contributing to that site! THANK YOU!
I have received some marketing materials from my niece (Thanks Lelia!) so if anyone has a public place (store, bar, etc.) and wants to hand out or place some 1/2 (8 1/2" X 5 1/2") sheets that are on card-stock, let me know & I will get them to you.
If any of you would like to come run with me, I'm open to have company! Just let me know what day is good for you and we can set up a time. you can also ride a bike if you aren't a runner but I will most-likely make you take some photos as I don't have the roll to afford my own photog!
Mileage totals for the week:
Miles:
Week 5: 16.44 Total: 184.79
Time:
Week 5: 2:39:11 Total: 29:31:46
Ave. Mile:

Calories burned:

Almost healthy, but this cough has a pretty good stronghold on my lungs. I have heard it will be a few weeks until it lets go. All in due time, until it's gone, I will just keep coughing it up!
LOVE U Mom & Dad!

February 2nd, Thursday
Happy Groundhog day! Well, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow forecasting 6 more weeks of winter but I saw 5.13 more miles on my Garmin, forecasting the 200 mile mark in my grasp! The sickness that had a hold on me like a chimp holding onto Dr. Goodall has finally eased up and I am feeling the energy return to my legs!
Thanks for bearing with my recovery but I am ready for the long haul with some strong antibodies in my blood stream now. If you haven't been sick yet, take care of yourself, this is a brutal strain that knocks you out for at least 2-3 days from my and many of my colleagues' experience.
I look forward to hitting Mission Bay fairly hard this weekend to get the mileage going again. I have to say that I am so excited to see all the wonderful donations so far, way more than I expected for the month of January when everyone is trying to pay for Christmas. If you have a store or other place that I can put some postcard type flyers, please let me know as I just got my marketing materials from my niece in Chicago. Time to spread the word!
Tonight, I have a quote from one of my favorites, Sir Winston Churchill. Keep on keepin on!
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts" I have a feeling thatn my parents know that quote well!
Love you Mom and Dad!

February 1st, Wednesday
Welcome to February! I am back on the running scene after a 5 day, sickness-induced, run free streak! Ok, so it was only 2.73 miles but it was fast in 23 minutes & 13 seconds. Feeling better but still some after effects of sickness holding on.
I ended my 1st month on a down note but I did still complete 168.35 miles. Not bad for a middle-aged teacher! I plan on getting back on track and opening up my lead on the average pace again soon! I also just got my marketing package from my niece, Lelia, so hopefully we will have some more friends joining you loyal readers soon.
Let me know who you think is going to win the Superbowl. I really don't care as I don't care for either team. Hope the game is competitive is about it for me. Justin Tuck is an ND alum so maybe I'll pull for him to do well!
I'll be in touch soon with more goodies but for now, it's bedtime and I'm going to be better about sleep from here on out!
