Sat & Sun 12/22 & 12/23

Saturday, Dec. 22nd:  Can you guess where I ran today???  If you said Fiesta Bay you would be right!  Just over 9 miles today to try and get back ahead of the game for 2112.  I'm sure Geddy, Neil, & Alex are reading this saying that I better get this done!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/255156314

Sunday, Dec. 23rd:  Today was a longer journey around Lake Murray but still a little fast for whatever reason.  I added on the end finger by the SCLL fields to add on more mileage for 8.5 miles.  Gotta keep rockin' the miles out to get these last 100 done.  Thanks for the great support and keep thinking about what you are going to do in 2013, I want to hear about it!

I will leave you with a video from one of my favorite bands, Cowboy Mouth, from the great city of New Orleans.  Not too many good ones out there but here is a live show of a great tune called EASY.  It is all about how it's so easy to complain about what is going on in our lives but it is worth it if you try to be glad for what you have and work hard for what you want!

Total Miles:   2061.23   Pace Runner:  2065.84   -  4.61 miles (Making up some ground so should be fine if I don't take too many days off!)

Love to the parental units, my family, friends & can't forget about my amazing supporters out there!  <3

W & F 12/19 & 12/21

Wednesday, Dec. 19th:  We are in the middle of finals at school and I have a lot of grading to do, but I obviously need to get some running done as well.  It was a crisp, clear day; a great day for running!    I did a 15K (9.3 miles) today around Fiesta Bay in record time.  I ran a 15K earlier this year in 1:22:46 and I did today's run in 1:16:15!  I was pretty excited to see how much I have improved!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/253109263

Friday, Dec. 21st:  Finals are over, so the kids are ecstatic!  Now it is the teacher's time to be overwhelmed.  Some simply do a scantron but I feel with my subject matters, I have to do some free response questions (FRQ's) as well to make sure they have full control of the material.  This can take a little time to get graded!  I ran Fiesta Bay again but I obviously was a little preoccupied with the grading that lied ahead as I made it last as long as I could!!!

Also, the world didn't end!  Hope you didn't buy in to the hype! :)

I have a little video for you today to make sure you finish the year (or a long running goal!) STRONG!  This is a favorite of mine that I show all my students/athletes at some point.

http://play.simpletruths.com/movie/finish-strong/

Here's to finishing your year with the Eye of the Tiger & to setting some great goals for 2013!  I took 2 days off this week so I have some ground to make up between now & the 31st!  Get it!

Total Miles:  2043.72   Pace Runner:  2054.30   - 10.58 miles  (I have some make-up miles to get done & quickly! Only 10 days left!)

Love to both of my wonderful parents & to all of you who donated and encouraged me along the way!  Keep me going for 10 more days! <3

Monday, December 17th

Monday, Dec. 17th:  Today we had a little end of 2012 celebration at the end of the school day.  They made a pathway that the students lined and I ran through it to signify the end of my run.  I thought it was going to be awkward but it was actually pretty cool!  Some of my students made a sign for me to run through:

Then I made them wait in anticipation....

Hi fives were going all around....

And then Tessya saved my lack of thought during a short interview!

They also shot a video that you can view here:

http://vimeo.com/55814749

I kind of blanked out.  Anyway, I ended up running a few more miles after school to keep the 2112 goal going forward.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/252574159

I need to run about 100 miles in 2 weeks so I need to stay healthy and find the time to run some quality miles.  Here's to going the extra mile (or 100 in this case!)

Total Miles:  2025.61   Pace Runner:   2031.21   -  5.6 miles behind pace, I better get moving!

Love to you Mom, Dad, family, and all those who are supporting me! <3

Sat & Sun, 12/15 & 12/16

Saturday, Dec. 15th:  Today is going to be the day!  I began with a morning run around Fiesta Bay and was happy to see the gal who gave me this crazy idea in the first place, Christine Dancey!  She was running the opposite way with a friend and she was concerned that I was going to finish by myself!  So sweet!  She has run 2010 in 2010 & 2011 in 2011 not to mention the fact that she ran 50 miles on her 50th birthday!  Amazing!!!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/252574147

I was bummed that I missed the CCHS kids & Dan but that would have made the day too perfect, I guess!  Next up, I did my last 5K with my brother Brian who does little true running any more.  He mostly does the elliptical these days in deference to his knees.  It was great to finish with him at the Miramar Reservoir, my 1st run there this year, oddly enough.  That put me at 2012.01 officially!!!!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/252574147

Tried to straight download this video w/o going thru Youtube so we will see if it works or not...

Then we went to Ballast Point for a little celebration!!!  Met Theresa, Chrislyn, and Dave there for a well deserved Victory at Sea!  Diane Bell was kind enough to put a little piece in the U-T on my run thanks to Kimberly King today as well:

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/dec/14/math-teacher-gets-lot-mileage-out-2012/

Next stop, 2112!  For all you Rush fans out there, I'm doing this last 100 for the best band in the world, who are finally being recognized this year by the R&R HoF!

Keep the encouragement coming!

Sunday, Dec. 16th:  Thought I would have a little fun today.  I was just going to cruz this one for some miles but, being at Lake Murray, my body always wants to go!  So, part way through, i realized that I had a decent pace going and began to push a little and ended up running my best ever 10 K, 49:06, under 8:00 min/mile pace!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/252574154

Total Miles:  2018.21  Pace Runner:  1929.54   +  88.67 miles (I need to be +100 by the 31st to get 2112 for all you math geniuses out there!)

Love you Mom & Dad, WE DID IT!!!!!  THANKS FOR ALL YOUR LOVE & SUPPORT!!!! <3

Mon - Wed 12/10 - 12/12

Monday 12/10:  Did the freeway run after school with add-ons.  Got a late start but got over 7 in so I was content.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/250955818

Tuesday 12/11:  Freeway run + swamp run to the "scary house" (dubbed by my girls on the XC country team) Got in over 9 miles which I am very happy about even though it is tough after a day at school.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/251733996

Wednesday 12/12:  Did the double Bay (Fiesta + Sail) for the first time in quite a while and after school, it was probably not a good idea.  My friend Theresa went with me on a bike so it was good to have someone to help me finish as the last couple of miles got a bit difficult. (This one looks really good on the Garmin map!)  The best part was that I broke the 2000 mile mark!  I never thought this day would come!  Hard to believe but here it is!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/251734001

Again, I want to thank you for the wonderful support that you have shown to me over the past 11+ months and that I couldn't have made it this far without all of you!  Thanks for the amazing donations (I will recap that when I get to the end) and the comments (especially you, Julia!).

So excited to get this in the books but then I want to get the extra 100 in (I know, even my dad thinks I'm crazy!)  Anyway, keep the faith and thanks again for being patient with these posts.  Going to catch up this week if it destroys me!

Total Miles:  2000.10   Pace Runner:  1907.55  + 92.55 miles!

LOVE you Mom & Pops!  Can't believe we made it to 2000! <3

Sat & Sunday 12/8 & 9

Sat Dec. 8th:  Ran a good paced 9 miles around Fiesta Bay and am feeling good about getting this done early (about 2 weeks or so) and then plan on going an extra 100 miles for 2112 (yes, I am a Rush fan!)

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/250955814

I hope you are doing well and getting in the Christmas spirit.  Not the buying of gifts but the true spirit of Christmas, spending time with those you love!  And if you aren't, maybe this will help:

Sunday Dec. 9th:  Ran this one quick as I was running out of sunlight!  It was a tough run but a good one!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/250955816

I am pushing toward the end.  You would think with the light at the end of the tunnel it would get a little easier but to be honest, my legs are dead and my shins are always day to day.  I try to just run and check my mind out on other things!

Here's to a quick finish and I hope a healthy one!  Cheers!

Total Miles:  1971.04  Pace Runner:  1891.06   + 79.98 miles ahead of pace!  That's what I'm talking about!

Love you Mom & Pops!  Almost there... <3

M - F 12/3 - 12/7

Monday, Dec. 3rd:  Ran around my neighborhood of Allied Gardens due to it getting late and lack of sun!  Haven't done this in a while but was good to see all the Christmas lights.  As you can see from the map, I ran all kinds of extras to get more mileage today!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/249231980

Tuesday, Dec. 4th:  WOW!  I have the shin splint from hell right now!  I thought my leg was starting to break or something!  I guess I won't be running in my neighborhood anymore!  I sucked it up and ran anyway, like any good runner would.  I did the combo freeway/swamp run and got in over 9!  Hoping some ice and good stretching will cure this baby quick!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/250027039

Thursday, Dec. 6th:  Felt better yesterday but still thought it was a good idea to give it some rest.  I only ran 5 miles today as my Garmin was giving me fits.  I guess I better fully charge it every run or I may not get all of my info in, frustrating!  That's OK because this is going to be the start of a long productive streak!  Time to Finish Strong!  Good motivational movie:

http://play.simpletruths.com/movie/finish-strong/

Friday, Dec. 7th:  Pearl Harbor Day.  Today's run was for all of our military, past, present, & future for the great sacrifices they all make for us to live the lives that we take for granted everyday.  Thanks Dad for being my hero, my friend, my role model, and my mentor in life!  I LOVE YOU!

This run was almost a 1/2 marathon, freeway, swamp, and to the HWY 5 and back to school.  On a roll and no time to look back!  Let's do this!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/250027041

Total Miles:  1952.03  Pace Runner:  1880.07   + 71.96 miles!  back over 70, very happy!

Love you both dearly, Mom & Dad! Looking forward to putting this in the books! <3

Found this today and of course thought immediately of Natalie & Amanda!  I know the this is what they would be telling you Post & Nield families!  They always give me comfort and support when I feel I can't run anymore & they have brought me this far and won't let me stop until I reach my goal!

Always missed, always loved, always cherished, always remembered!  NN&AP

Dec. 1st & 2nd Sat & Sun

Saturday December 1st:

Wow, it's really hear, the 12th month!  The last month!  I almost can't believe it!  And at 1900 + miles I really don't have that far to go!

I ran the Fiesta Bay loop (probably my favorite run) today with the Ski Beach addition and then a little extra loop where I park for good measure!

Not sure what I have or haven't posted before as I have lost track so you might see a few things you have seen before depending upon how long you have been following but they will be good I think!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/249231948

For you non-locals, here is Fiesta Bay.  Ski Beach boat ramp on the left and Bay Park in the background.

Sunday, December 2nd:

With my tired body, it still manages to surprise me once in a while!  Historically, over the past 11 months, running at Lake Murray always seems to bring out my speed (if you can call it that!).  I usually run faster here for no apparent reason.  Well, today I managed to run my fastest time of any real distance, just over 8 min. miles with my 7th mile being my fastest ever @ 7:42/mile.  I want to see what I can do when I'm well rested now!!!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/249231965

That much closer and I hope that you will all keep me in your thoughts  and prayers as I come down the home stretch along with my parents and all the great people who have donated, commented, shared and cheered me on along the way!

I love this quote from a great actor I'm sure you will recognize:

Here's to a healthy December everyone!  Cheers!

Total Miles:  1918.38   Pace Runner:  1852.58  + 65.8 miles ahead of pace!  (Trying to get back to 70 + soon)

Love you Mom & Dad!  Thinking of you all the time! <3

Sunday, December 9, 2012

M - Th 11/26 - 11/29

Monday 11/26:  My extended version of the "freeway run" with all kinds of little add-ons gets me that much closer to the 1900 mile mark!  Also found out that our girls XC team took 2nd place in the state meet on Saturday!  It was the highest finish in school history!  Also, Paula who was on my JV team just last year, finished 11th, one spot away from being All-State!  She will be back next year and I am so proud of her work ethic, drive, determination to improve... I could go on & on...!  Way to go ladies!!!  So proud of you!!!  You too Dan!

Also want to give Notre Dame some props for their great season and now their trip to the BCS championship game!!!!  12-0 beating 4 top 20 teams and the season opening # 1 seeded team USC!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/247428393

Tuesday 11/27:  Did the freeway run combined with the swamp run again today which is a good mileage eater!  It can be a little long mentally, especially the end is pretty up hill, but when you are finished, it is very rewarding to see close to 10 miles added to the total!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/247428398

Wednesday 11/28:  Today, the creature of habit branched out a little and put together a couple of XC runs to make a longer 2012 run!  I did the Torrey Pines run and then from the bottom of the stairs I did the 3rd light run in reverse.  Not a bad route but a little long for the JV gals.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/248024988

Thursday 11/29:  The "freeway run" with add-ons was the route again today.  Had a new experience today up at the intersection of Rancho Santa Fe Farms and Carmel Valley.  They are doing construction to widen the road and there was some fresh blacktop that I ran over.  It was pretty cool feeling the heat from the fresh tar as I ran over it.  Helped that it was a cool day to begin with but a neat feeling none the less.  Oh, by the way, did I tell you that I broke 1900 miles today!!!!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/248024997

Hoping that I didn't post this already but what heck.  It is a good one anyway!  Hope you had a happy thanksgiving!

Total Miles:  1900.96  Pace runner:  1836.09  +  64.87 miles (creeping back to respectability!)

Love and miss you Mom& Pops!  <3

23rd & 24th Fri & Sat

Friday November 23rd:  Black Friday for most but I took it upon myself to get a great run in at Red Rock Canyon.  I don't run on the loop because there is some serious hill for about the 1st 6 miles or so!  I run on the road that is Charleston that turns into Blue Diamond.  I always park in front of the enterance to the conservation area or loop and then run along the road.  Today I went further than ever before to Spring Mountain Ranch.  Usually nice with little traffic.  Mostly bikes and rarely another runner do I see.  Felt good today with all that turkey in me!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/247428385

Saturday the 24th of November:  Back at it again, for 10 more miles on the same path but did a little 2nd loop to get in all 10.  Happy with the times for both runs and can't say that I saw any cool animals or anything out of the ordinary.  I did see, on both days, a car club with a couple of Ferrari's, an A8, and a few other nice rides, just cruising up and down the road!

M - W Nov. 19 - 21

Monday Nov. 19th:  The ever-popular "freeway run" was done today with the usual add-ons for getting that extra mileage.  Not much to say about today other than I am that much closer to seeing my parents and my family from the rest of the country!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/245014899

Tuesday Nov. 20th:  The "freeway run" with the "swamp run" tacked on was the route today.  Some good mileage and moving closer to the goal.  It's getting exciting I would have to say!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/247428375

Wednesday, Nov. 21st:  Another trip around Fiesta Bay for a nice morning run.  I have the Rush show tonight at the old SD Sports Arena (not sure what they are calling it these days...).  Then, it's off to Vegas for Thanksgiving in the morning.  Most-likely won't have time to run tomorrow but should make it out to Red Rock while I am there.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/247428380

That will be it for now, I'll get the Vegas runs in on the next post.  Here is wishing you all a fantastic Thanksgiving with you and yours!  THANK YOU for all of your wonderful support throughout this adventure!  Can't thank you all enough!  I am VERY THANKFUL for ALL of YOU!!!!!!

Sat & Sun, 17th & 18th of Nov.

Saturday, Nov. 17th:

Today was the CIF finals for Cross Country (XC for short) and it was an up and down day to say the least.  I didn't get the run in that I wanted but what can you do!  The girls started things off and a junior, Paula, who ran for me last year on JV, finished 7th and the top 6 all finished 20th or better to win CIF!!!  The rough part of this race was our 7th finisher, CC, who would have finished top 20 but about 25 yards away from the finish line collapsed!  She struggled to get up a couple of times and keep running but kept losing her balance.  She ended up walking the rest of the way and still finished 31st.  What a trooper!

I guess that was the start of the downfall as the boys didn't fare quite so well.   There were 6 teams that were pretty evenly matched but we just didn't run our best races.  We had our top 5 all in the top 42 but it wasn't good enough.  We finished 6th but 2 - 6 were all within 20 points of each other!  Still a great season guys and Patrick finished 3rd to make it to state along with the girls team!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/244892527

Sunday, Nov. 18th:

Saw the Rush show in Anaheim with my friend Chris Babbitt last night.  A very different show but always great in my opinion!  They played some more off the beaten path songs along with most of their new "Clockwork Angels" album with a 7 piece string ensemble.  Had a very large man fall back down the stairs on me & I had no other choice but to catch him.  I managed to mess my back up a little in the process though.  Tonight's run was cut a little short due to my back and the fact that the sun was going down at a rapid pace!

The Mission Bay Park part of the Fiesta Bay loop.  I'll get more miles in soon to get back on track!

Keep the support coming in any form possible!  DONATE!, SHARE! & SUPPORT!  THANK YOU!

Total Miles:  1825.93   Pace Runner:   1775.62   +  50.31 miles!

See you in a few short days Mom & Dad! <3

M - F Nov. 12th - 16th

Tuesday, Nov. 13th:  I took yesterday off to rest after the 1/2 marathon (I thought it was well deserved!) but put in a good run at Mission Bay today!

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/244892507

There was a crazy low tide but the sunset was fantastic.  That is my favorite time to run, either sunrise or sunset.  I love living in America's Finest City!  Oh ya, I crossed the 1,800 mile mark today too!!!!

Wednesday, Nov. 14th:  I ran the "freeway run" at school today with as many mile adders included as possible.  (see map on the garmin link)

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/244892515

Friday, Nov. 16th:  Another stroll around Fiesta Bay but in good time (under (9:00 pace) which isn't too bad if I do say so myself for an old guy.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/244892522

Saw all the 3 - Day walkers coming into their tent city at Crown Point on my run as well.  They must have inspired me to run faster!  Great job to all of you who donated and participated.  A shout out to one of my students who is the daughter of Julie Walz Giacalone, Sam!  We are all praying for Lisa!

Here's to living in the present and to a great future without cancer or Parkinson's!!!  Please DONATE, SHARE, & SUPPORT!!!!!   I thank you all for following my journey.  Stay tuned for the exciting climax to see if I make it or not... everyday is a new adventure!

Sunday, November 11th

Silver Strand Half Marathon:  Today was a fun race!  Hung out with my friend Janet for the 1st 8 miles and then actually ran the last 5 as you can see by the mile times:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/244892494

Here we are before the start, ready to roll! It was a perfect day to run,  nice and cool!  The last time I ran this race it was baking from the get go and people were dropping like flies from the heat.  A lack of water stops didn't help matters either!  Luckily, they have come a long way since then and I would say that this race is much better organized.  The medals still are on the low end of the scale though compared to the other 1/2's I have run.

My friend Dan Guillory took this as he is at most of these races working for West Coast Roadrunners.  Thanks Dan!  When I am actually in the air, that is a good sign that I am actually running fairly hard!  Finish Strong is the motto!

I will do my best to get caught up here in the next week or so, so with any luck, I will have posts flying up here at a fast and furious pace!  Keep your fingers crossed!

Also, as we get down to the end of this crazy journey, please share my story, blog, FB page:

and donate if you have not had the chance already!  A great tax break is coming your way if you do & it may be the last time you get to get the tax benefit, who knows???

Total Miles:  1792.41  Pace Runner:  1737.14   +  55.27 miles (back over 50 mile cushion, yea!)  Now it's time to really stretch it out!

Love to you both Mom & Pops!  Thanksgiving is coming...
