January 29th, Sunday

Just a quick note, still not feeling good at all!  Hoping tomorrow will be the turn of the page to healthier times.  Not worried, just want to get this behind me!  Take care!

Love you Mom & Dad!

January 28th, Saturday

Well, I had hoped this wouldn't have happened so early but I knew it would come sooner or later.  Came down with a crazy fever yesterday at school.  But I'm pretty hard-headed sometimes and I thought I could push my way through it!  Managed to defend my title at the CCHS teacher poker tourney and then watched the big basketball games (OLP/Saints) our big Catholic school rivals.  Girls lost, boys won.

I at least had the good sense to have my friend Gary drive me home.  Thanks Rem!  Slept for 14 hours and feeling a little better but no running yesterday or today.  With any luck, maybe tomorrow.  Really wanted to knock out 200 miles this month but that won't happen now. :(  I just have to look at it as a good rest for my legs!  (I really need to get more sleep during the week!  I'm sure i brought some of this on myself!)

Just have to hope this blows by quickly and I can get back on the trail/road/sidewalk!  I am so thankful for all of the support I am getting!  This is not even a month in and I think I set my goal way too low, maybe I should double it!  No donation is too small!  I will talk to you again tomorrow, hopefully with some more miles to report!

Here are the details from week 4 such as they are:

Miles:
Week 4: 33.77  Total: 168.35
Time:
Week 4: 5:21:46  Total: 26:52:35
Ave Mile:
Week 4: 9:32  Total: 9:34
Calories burned:
Week 4:  4199  Total: 20,739

Here is a quote from one of my childhood idols that I need to heed a little more often:

"If you don't do what's best for your body, you're the one who comes up on the short end!"
~ Julius Erving

January 26th, Thursday

Hi all,

Fairly good day of running, 8.12 miles in 79 minutes and 38 seconds.  Went on the 56 to Carmel Creek + and back to school.  I could really use some comments to help keep the motivation going... (hint, hint!)

What is helping the mojo are the many of you who have donated of late!  Very encouraging as that is what this is all about!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!  I will be getting thank you's out as soon as I can!

Looking forward to the weekend & being able to hopefully catch up on some sleep!  I just can't get to bed early enough!  One issue with living alone, there is no one to help you out in doing things you need to do.  Such is life!

Today I have a short little movie about the little things adding up and changing the world!  Kind of appropriate I would say:

Enjoy and keep passing the word around, COMMENT, and I thank you for all you do to help me out!

Love you, Mom & Dad!

January 25th, Wednesday

Tonight was one of my toughest runs to date.  The rash wasn't too bad but I was completely exhausted!  I decided to run at Lake Murray & on my way home from school I was nodding off, not good!  I also forgot to get a snack for energy so I was running on fumes.  Luckily, I had my music (my Snug Buds died yesterday so I used the stock apple headset which don't really stay in your ears!) and thoughts of my dad to pull me through!

My dad is simply amazing!  His fight with Parkinson's would be enough for anyone to deal with but he just got done battling throat cancer (similar to Tony Gwynn).  I remember talking to my friend Kevin Murphy about it and he wasn't sure my dad would be able to handle the chemo and radiation at the age of 81!  His medical staff were all amazed how he not only survived but was came through it like a man 1/2 his age.  If that wasn't enough, one doctor said, after looking at an x-ray of my dad's back, that he couldn't believe he was still upright and walking around!  My dad is a walking talking miracle who is still determined to play softball again!  SO  positive, SO strong, SO humble...I will tell you more about him later, but he inspires me everyday!

In my dad's honor and as one of my theme songs for this year, going back to THE concert tour, 1984, here is The Boss:

The Boss: No Surrender

Today was 6.75 miles in 62 minutes & 51 seconds.  I thought it was going to be a lot slower than that!  Felt like I was running 12 minute miles!  Go out and do something great this year! No retreat, baby, no surrender!

Also wanted to thank my loyal readers!  We crested the 1000 view mark here yesterday!  Love you Mom & Dad!

January 24th, Tuesday

I took the day off yesterday for many reasons, weather, work, but mostly I forgot a key piece of equipment for my run, my socks!  Anyway, no worries as I put in 10.38 miles doing the run west along the 56 going to the Hwy 5 and back.  Great weather but I did have a small issue with my underarmor getting a hole and now I have a nice welt/rash on my inner thigh.  Might be painful until I get it to heal.

On the brighter side, I broke the 150 mile mark and am still plowing forward toward my goal.  I GREATLY appreciate all your comments (I would love more!) so please don't be shy!  It really gives me motivation.  I got a great email from Stephanie Kourie, the mother of a cross country runner who knew Gar Millay.  I welcome your stories about other cancer warriors, Parkinson's warriors (Thanks Ron & Stacey Jess).  Feel free to share them here if you like! :)

As of today's total, I could have run to Yuma, AZ or Lancaster, CA (these are straight line distances, not following roads, so they will be different than driving distances! :)

I will leave you with a quote from the Sci-Fi Author Ray Bradbury:

"Living at risk is jumping off the cliff and building your wings on the way down"

Thank you for your efforts and please don't stop!  Now that I know my folks are locked in here now, I will finish all my posts with this: I Love you Mom & Dad!

January 22nd, Sunday

I ran down at Mission Bay (8.52 miles in 80 minutes 30 seconds) and ran into my classmate from Uni, Chrislyn Millay.  She recently lost her brother, Gar, to brain cancer and it was good to catch up with her.  He was a great baseball player, father, husband, and human being who was taken from us too soon.

Sorry I didn't get a video done (maybe you are happy about that!) But I will do another one to mark the end of month for sure.  Tomorrow is going to be wet and cold and I also am working the basketball games in the afternoon so running may or may not happen, we will see.

I will leave you with a poster that I have up in the back of my classroom:
The fine print says, "Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful"~Ralph Waldo Emerson  Here's to making life meaningful!  Good night!

January 21st, Saturday

Took a much needed day off yesterday & went and saw our hoop team go 19-1 by beating the defending state champs, the Lincoln Hornets, 81-64!  Roll Dons!

So, I was back on the running trail today after spending the morning at school for the 8th grade entrance/placement test.  Thankfully the rain only lasted until about 12-1pm so I had a good dry run at Lake Murray, 8.78 miles in just over 82 minutes.  No video today but maybe tomorrow.

Stats for week 3 & Totals:
Miles:
Week 3: 43.06    Total: 134.58 (I've already run to Los Angeles!)
Time:
Week 3: 6:47:37  Total: 21:30:49
Pace:
Week 3: 9:28/mile Total: 9:36/mile
Calories:
Week 3: 5284  Total: 16,540

Lastly, a student of mine wrote a great article in our school newspaper about my endeavor so I thought I would share it with you.  Thank you so much, Clare!

Please keep my parents in your thoughts and prayers as well as a friend, Dave Keays, who used to play fantasy baseball with me who is fighting cancer and is not doing well right now. I also want you to keep Sylvia Byrne in your prayers too as she is undergoing treatment for cancer now too.  This list is growing way too fast!

January 19th, Thursday

Here is your next installment from your 2012 in 2012 runner:  Today marks the 7th day in a row that I have run at least 5 1/2 miles.  What am I thinking?!?!?!  8 miles even today in just under 78 minutes.  Started out well but legs got heavy late and it was slow going on the way back to school.  Shin splint was mild for the most part, let's hope that becomes a trend!

I teach at a beautiful private high school in San Diego that is really coming around athletically and is pretty top notch already academically.  Keep your eye on Cathedral Catholic, not quite Bishop Gorman yet, but we aren't the only Catholic school in town either!

Tomorrow is definitely going to be a much deserved day off from running as I am working the clock & scoreboard for the JV games after school & then I plan on going down to "The Hive" to see our Varsity teams take on the Lincoln Hornets.

My parents are still planning on going to Maui in February so I hope they make it.  I tell ya, they don't let ANYTHING keep them down!  Carpe Diem!

A photo today shows my whiteboard in the back of my classroom where we are keeping track of my mileage and fundraising progress (no one ever accused me of being an artist!):  The Duke also has a quote for you at the top!

Keep passing the word and donate if you can or at least make a pledge to do so at the email at the top of the page.  Thank you for your support!!!

January 18th, Wednesday

Wow, what a day!  Shin splint from hell on my left leg appeared out of nowhere this afternoon.  Thought it was going to be a rough run but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.  Went for a waist down whirlpool afterwords to calm down my legs.  Felt good after I was frozen! :)  Short run of 5.56 miles today in about 53 minutes.  Did 56 east from school.  Saw a lot of CCXC kids running to get in shape for track.  Can't wait for their season to start!  Also CCHS Boys soccer beat Saints 2-1 today, ROLL DONS!

Also had a student/Ambassador start a group on facebook last night and there are now 183 members!  Thank you Cat Hedrick!  Keep sharing!  I will also have a flyer out soon that my niece, Lelia is making for me to help spread the word.  If you have domain over a public place and would like to advertise my endeavor, please let me know.

I leave you tonight with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.  It mirrors my journey as I am beginning to face some turbulence:

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable...Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle;  the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals"

Take care, my friends!

January 17th, Tuesday

The days keep going fast and furious!  Muscles are getting tired and it gets tougher and tougher to get out the door to run.  But that's why I have you!  I definitely need your encouragement, thoughts, & prayers to keep this thing going!

Today was the Carmel Creek run for 7.66 miles in just under 74 minutes.  I need to keep my pace under control to keep the legs able to keep moving.  Talked to my mom & dad tonight and they sounded good.  My dad's roommate from college just visited and I could tell they had a good time with them!

Well, it's late and I need my sleep.  Some food for thought:  Get out there & do the things you have always wanted to, talked about doing, or dreamed of doing.  Life is not a spectator sport, get out there and live!  Eat your Frog!

January 16th, MLK Monday

1 small milestone down 20 to go for the 2012 in 2012 goal!  I have broken the 100 mile marker and am hungry for more!

I ran @ Lake Murray this afternoon for 6.51 miles in 57 minutes and28 seconds.  It was cold this afternoon so I ran too fast again but don't feel too bad all things considered.  (I need to run a 1/2 marathon in the cold next time!)  Total mileage to date: 104.57 miles!

Let us all remember the reason we have the day off today, one of the most humane human beings to walk this earth & all that he stood for: Martin Luther King Jr.

Enjoy some of his speech:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeW9U8YPz_I&feature=related

Time for bed to get some rest for the next 100!  Keep spreading the word for me please & I'll keep running! ;)

January 15, Sunday

Not much time today so this one will be short.  2012 in 2012 is rolling right along. 6.55 mile trek around Sail Bay & a great meal at Harry's Coffee Shop.  California breakfast burrito was awesome!  Thanks to the Gotfredson's!  Go see them down on Girard Ave. if you haven't been lately!

Tomorrow, we break the 100 mile mark!!!!!  I'd rather be sailing on Sail Bay but maybe next year!

January 14th, Saturday

The end of week 2!  Here is a word from your runner:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCPC9I0TBTA

Today I went for the whole enchilada.  I did the "Death March" coined by my friend Katie Linn.  It consists of both the east side of Mission Bay along with Sail Bay (the west side).  I have run both of these separately but together it is 12 miles and it took me 115 minutes 56 seconds to complete.

Some stats for the first 2 weeks:
Miles:
Week 1: 45.42   Week 2: 46.1

Time:
Week 1: 7:21:50  Week 2: 7:21:22

Pace:
Week 1: 9:44/mi  Week 2:  9:35/mi

Calories burned: (according to my Garmin)
Week 1:  5648  Week 2:  5608

Hard to believe it has been 2 weeks already.  I want to thank all of you who have already donated, left comments, and given me support in any way so far.  Still have a long way to go but I feel confident, I have the will to keep this train rolling, and with your help & support, I think we can do this and blow the lid off the meager goals I have set.

Please keep my mom and dad in your thoughts & prayers, as well as my family, school, & friends.  I will most definitely do the same in return.

Time for some ice, sleep & more food! :)  Take care,

Tom

January 13th, Friday

Hi all,

Today we had our school retreat for faculty & staff and although my thoughts seemed to be all over the board throughout the day, I kept coming back to how lucky I am to have a great family and parents, a wonderful place to work, & the ability to hopefully help students along the way to grow and become responsible and caring adults.

A quick note on the NFL playoffs, if Tebow beats the Pats on Sat, I will do my own Tebow pose and post it here!  That is ALL I see on ESPN as the nation seems to be under the Tebow spell or at least the media is putting us under this spell!   It's like there are no other games being played!  AUGH!

Today went pretty well, 6.34 miles in 60 minutes ran 56 bike path east and added the Old Carmel Valley cul-de-sac for a little extra milage.  Went to the basketball double-header at school afterwards where both the girls (60-42) and boys teams dismantled University City 89-38.  What a fun team to watch play the game, a little bit of everything and at 18-1, they are ranked #3 in the county!  Here's the story if you are interested:  http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jan/14/at-18-1-cathedral-melding-nicely/

Going to try and do a long one on Sat so here is some motivation from a few "basketball coaches":

Have a great weekend!

January 12th, Thursday

Took the day off today to recoup but I talked to my parents and they are very excited about the new followers here and the rising total of donations.  My dad sounded pretty good which gave my spirits a lift.  My mom is so inspiring to me, going through cancer treatment while taking such good care of my dad.  She is one tough cookie!

Hope you all have a great long weekend and I look forward to breaking the century mark by Monday at the latest!

January 11th, Wednesday

Thanks so much for the comments!  Now I feel like someone is out there paying attention. :)  I feel better than I have all week!

Today was interesting, I was getting ready to run after school and went to put on my shoes... they weren't there!!!  No big deal, I thought, I'll just go home & run down there.  I get home and my shoes aren't there either!!!  Yikes!  So I sat there & thought for a minute (kinda like in the Hangover, trying to figure out what happened).  So I end up doing what my mom always taught me to do, retrace my steps.  Took my bag and backpack to my truck, put them in the back of my cab, and there they were!!!  My shoe bag fell out of my other bag!

So I run down at Lake Murray and was treated to a fantastic sunset for much of my run over the lake (wish I had my camera on my run, kind of).  I literally had a smile plastered on my mug for the last few miles thinking that everything happens for a reason.  I am so blessed with great students, friends, family, and a wonderful place to work with awesome colleagues.

Felt pretty good today and ran 6.95 miles in 63 minute & 9 seconds, almost too fast but when you feel good you just want to go!  I ask that you spread the word even if you can't donate, I'm sure you know someone who can!  Take care and I will leave you with a great Mark Twain quote today:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, and catch the trade winds in your sails! EXPLORE. DREAM. DISCOVER.

January 10th, Tuesday

Time: we rarely think about it unless we don't have any.  This will be one of the bigest challenges I face going forward, finding the time to run.  I'm writing this the morning of 1/11 due to the fact that I passed out on my couch last night watching Part II of the Hangover.

I ran after school, the freeway (56) run going east of Carmel Valley Rd.  6.62 miles in about 65 minutes.  At times, felt I was running through fly paper with tree trunks for legs!  Fatigue is setting in so I will have to run through it!  Let's hope today is a little easier...

Take care & I'll talk to you later!

January 9th, Monday

Welcome to the new and improved blog!  Thanks to my good friend Michelle for the much needed upgrade!
Today was a day that I would not have run ordinarily.  Just wasn't feeling it, AT ALL!  But once I got going it was OK.  I ended up going 7.68 miles in 74 minutes & 18 seconds in case you are keeping track!  Had the misfortune of crossing the path of a flattened skunk.  I thought it was bad in a car!  I could not get away fast enough!!!  Ran along the bike path on the 56 like what I did last Wed.  Feeling a bit more sore than usual tonight but hope ice & some stick work will help.

I am going to do a lot of random things during this journey.  One will be to drink a little less beer, but when I do, I prefer Ballast Point!  In fact, that will be the only beer I drink for the rest of the year due to the great support Jack has given me!  Drop by the Old Grove Brewery in Scripps Ranch (Amber will treat you right!) or the taster bar at the Home Brew Mart at the bottom of the hill from Uni near Morena.

Here is another song I heard today & it is combined with scenes from my favorite movie of all time: (lyrics are below the video when playing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ9ielNUH24

Best lines:

I've got to keep running the course
I've got to keep running and finish at all costs
I've got to keep going, be strong
Must be so determined and push myself on...

Have a great one and I will talk to you again soon.  Please keep my folks in your prayers & thoughts!

January 8th Sunday

Hi all,

Today, I switched things up and ran around Sail Bay, the west part of Mission Bay.  Very foggy when I arrived at Crown Point but by the time I crossed the 2 bridges by Sea World, I found some nice sunshine!
Only 6.5 miles today in 62 min. and 17 seconds for you statisticians out there.  Pretty mundane run today actually, lots of walkers, some joggers & only 3 runners (sub 8 min. milers, i.e. faster than me!)

Heard a great song that I shared with one of my donors on FB so I thought I would share it here.  Very motivational but on the harder side of music.  If nothing else check out the lyrics below the video.  Best I Can by Queensryche:
I wish you all a great week!  Don't forget to spread the word and donate if you can, here are the links again:

Talk to you tomorrow!

January 7th

http://youtu.be/M02OVm_zBVE  Latest video feed

This is running Day 6 but really day 7 because I took yesterday off from running.  I will just skip non-running days here.  I'm just going to stick to the date from now on I think!  Step 1 of 52 is complete!  I have a total of 45.42 miles in 6 days of running and that puts me ahead of schedule, YEH!

Anyway, I am going to see how many days I can make it without mentioning my major muscle group in the back of my leg! :)  Ran 10 miles today around the east bay + the total area of Ski Beach.  Great day for a run, cool but sunny, just beautiful!  Hope tomorrow is as nice.

Going to see the Beat Farmers reunion/tribute (Country Dick Montana & Buddy Blue are no longer with us) with John Philpott, should be fun!

Now some of you might be waiting to donate until I actually run all these miles.  Now that sounds fair but please let me know what you are pledging to donate to keep me properly motivated.  You can do this by shooting me an email at: run2012in2012@yahoo.com then I can hunt down the doubting Thomas' after I finish early!

As Always, I thank you for your support (& I would love more comments please!) & I am going to try and get some help to improve this page as I have been told you can't subscribe to it among other things.

Take care,

Tom

Day 5

Jan 5th:  These miles are definitely having an effect on my body.  A definite Tortoise run today: 6.21 miles in 61 minutes and 49 seconds.  Good thing I'm not racing!  Did the bike path run but in the opposite (east) direction from Carmel Valley on the 56 not quite to Camino Del Sur.  Definitely a day off tomorrow!
I'm not even going to mention my hamstring anymore because it is going to be tight everyday!

Met some friends at Ballast Point for a beer after my run today.  (By the way, that will be the only brand of beer I drink this year, best beer in town if you ask me!)  Great to see old friends!

This is definitely the 1st time I have ever run 5 days in a row and at more than 7 miles/day, WOW!  Looking to get a good one in on Sat. to finish week 1 strong.  Thanks for your support!!!! :)

I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Jim Valvano before cancer took him away from us before a game @ UCSB in the late 1980's.  You you see what kind of guy he was below but he was best known for being a great college basketball coach, winning the Big Dance in 1983.  I feel kind of bad now because the last thing I said to him was, "Good luck, you're going to need it!"  The Gauchos did go on to win that game by double digits and Jimmy V was quoted as saying, "It was louder than thunder in there tonight" thus the Event Center was aptly named "The Thunderdome"  Will always love Jimmy V!

Jimmy V will inspire you!:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuoVM9nm42E

Day 4

Jan. 4th  1st day back to school, now the fun begins with time management!  I'm not an expert at this in the first place but now I better improve.  Ran after school today down Del Mar Heights to Carmel Valley, across the 56 and west down the bike path to Carmel Creek and back, 7.66 miles in 75 minutes and 50 seconds.  Pretty slow but some hills so not upset.  The best part was that my hammy went numb (started feeling better) and so with some ice tonight I hope I have turned that corner!  Maybe a day off is in order tomorrow!

Saw a guy on a seated bike that had hand cranks and we were going back and forth on the way back, I would pass him on the uphill and he would return the favor on the downhill.  Must be a good work out!

Thought about our angels Natalie and Amanda today as I know that they had run my route today often.  I know they will be helping me when I am in need!  I pray for the Nield, Post & Thomas families daily.   A little feed back would be nice to know that I'm not just talking to myself!!!!

Lastly, a quote from Jack London, "The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.  I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.  I shall use my time."

Day 3

Hi all, well, it's not going to be easy, but day 3 is in the books, 6.3 miles in 59 minutes and 16 seconds.  Got a late start & was 5 min. late to my service day but I was forgiven, I think...

Lake Murray again today, much less crowed than yesterday.  There is this woman (mayor of Lake Murray to me) who has bleach blonde hair but is ALWAYS at the lake!  Morning, noon, night, doesn't matter, she is always there!  Anyway, she waved to me today which must mean I am there too much!

Well, school starts tomorrow and then things will really get interesting as far as finding time to run.  But I was the one who signed up for this...wasn't I???  I'll have to take some more pictures but in lue of that here is a great video from the greatest band not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

Jan 2nd

Day 2:  Didn't realize it was going to get so hot today!  Should have run much earlier, oh well...
Today, I ran around Lake Murray, one of my favorite places to run as it is in the hood where I grew up & not too far from my house.  Today I ran 6.7 miles at a much slower pace, total time 64 minutes & 9 seconds.

I'm new to this blogging thing so feel free to let me know if you want to know anything that I'm not sharing.  My stomach is still a bit tender but better than yesterday!  Right hamstring, not the one I hurt last fall, is very tight but workable.  This photo is from yesterday before my run.  Hope I can trim a few inches off that boiler I have been sporting lately! :)  Keep the faith and my parents in your thoughts and prayers!  Less than 2000 miles to go!!!!!  YEH!!!!

Jan 1st

Video week 1:

Day 1:  I got myself into this so I will have to run myself out of it!  Hope you can all help in one form or another but obviously I would like you to donate to either the American Cancer Society or the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research.

I ran 8.55 miles in 82 minutes and 8 seconds around Mission Bay east.  Decent pace considering I had a bad cramp in my right side before I even began!  Saw the Derenthals before I left the runner's bathroom by the Info Center.  Always good to see familiar faces and the good luck that they wished me went along way too!

Fun note: Ran over a pair of jeans on the sidewalk in PB.  I guess someone partied right out of their pants on New Year's Eve!  Thanks for your support!  TR

Have to use this quote:  "The journey of a thousand miles (or 2012!) begins with a single step" ~ Chinese proverb
