March 31, Saturday

Today I finally had some more company on my run!  My brother, Brian & my nephew, Timmins rode a bike built for 2 around Sail Bay with me.  It was a cloudy, cool day that was perfect for a run and the Crew Classic was going on at Fiesta Bay and we got to see a good part of the races from the Ingraham St bridge.  8.22 miles today in 75 minutes & 59 seconds.

This brings the month of March to a close.  Almost can't believe a quarter of the year has already gone by!  Sometimes the time flies & others, it creeps along like a tortoise!  I am glad to say that I am ahead of schedule but still a long way to go!

March 30, Friday

Crazy stuff has gone on since I last typed at you!  We have had a possible MRSA case at our school and we had classes canceled today and all events on campus have been canceled for the weekend along with the campus being closed until Monday while they scour the whole place.  I completely understand the precautions and all but it is a little tough on my running!  I managed to leave my running shoes w/ my custom inserts in my classroom and I can't get on campus to get them.  BUMMER!!!

Also went to see Rock of Ages last night and it was a great show.  Had something for everyone, classic 80's tunes, decent story line, love story, & comedy.  Some pretty good voices too.

Ran 6.51 miles in 58 minutes & 54 seconds around Lake Murray in my old shoes and worn out inserts but I made it and I think my feet will make it through the weekend, I hope!

Please keep my student and her family in your thoughts & prayers that she will be OK.  Hope you have a great weekend!

March 28th, Wednesday

This my 10th day in a row of running & boy did I feel it!  6.43 miles in 63 minutes & 22 seconds.  Time for a day off tomorrow.  I hope you all have a great Thursday and I will recharge the batteries and be ready to go again on Friday!

This is what I felt like coming to the end of my run today!  Over 74 miles in the last 10 days!  Doh!

On the wildlife front, we have a duck couple that spend a lot of time on our campus at Cathedral, mostly in the pool but they do waddle around campus quite a bit too.  Today when I was running, the Mallard flew over me quacking away & then about 50 yards further along his female friend flew over me but was very silent.  Also, on Tuesday I crossed paths with an unlucky squirrel who looked petrified on the side of the bike path down by Carmel Creek Rd.

March 27th, Tuesday

Well, today was a big one!  I am now 1 quarter of the way done with my quest!  I ran 8.32 miles today in 79 minutes & 44 seconds.

When I started this journey, I was worried that I would never get this far much less do it this fast (87 days!)  This definitely gives me a little momentum going forward but I still need your help!!!!

This guy looks like he is moving slower than even I run but you get the point.  I am pretty excited to reach this point but I still have a long way to go.  I greatly appreciate all the encouragement that I have received from all of you these past few months but I will need even more to keep this going.

Thanks for all of the support so far!  I am lucky to know some pretty incredible people & there are some pretty incredible people who I don't even know who have helped out my cause.  I thank Derek & Tehya for the awesome inspiration & I hope that Natalie & Amanda keep pushing me forward, 1 step & 1 mile at a time!  Mom & Dad, your incredible spirits keep me motivated everyday.  Stay positive, stay strong, & stay beautiful!

This was day 8 in a row and just shy of 60 miles in that time period.  Trying to get through Wed to take the day off on Thursday.  Today was 7.25 miles on the east 56 route.  My shins were in pain today from the extreme down hills on the 15K course yesterday.  Hope they heal fast!

Tomorrow will be a big day and possibly for 2 reasons if I can go long enough.  Rest has got to be a priority but where is it going to fit in?!?!?!  Ambassador names are swirling around in my head and I need to cut half of them, there is no easy solution!

I leave you with a great quote for my situation and any really...

March 25th, Sunday

Today I ran the Hot Chocolate 15K downtown.  If you are a chocolate lover, you have to do this next year!  The course was pretty hilly starting at the PetCo Park parking lot, going up to University via Florida and then down Pershing, up 26th St. & finally down C St. back to the start.  I ran way too fast, 9.36 miles in 1:22:45 which was below 9:00 miles.  I hope I am not hurting tomorrow!  That's what happens when I'm left to my own devices and don't run with someone who will keep me under control!

I'm starting to get a little bold in my advertising campaign for this run.  I decided to start to decorate my truck and here is the 1st step.  I have a few other ideas that might or might not happen but you will see it here if it does.

My truck is pretty old (177,000 miles) so I might get creative, we will see...

Hope you all have a great week!  I will be busy trying to pick 45 kids out of the 100 applications I have for Ambassadors for next year for school.  Always the toughest job I have all year!  Wish me luck!

Hi all,

Today had a slow start but I finally got to running around 11 AM @ my neighborhood pond, Lake Murray.   Ran 6.5 miles in 58 minutes & 56 seconds.  Nice cool weather to run in though!  Went to LAX Military Salute at Cathedral where I teach and saw both teams win and the Leap Frogs from the US Navy parachute in to the stadium.  Very cool event!

I will have week 12 totals up soon but the time has gone too quickly as usual.  Time to sleep!

Short run today, 6.41 miles in 60 minutes & 38 seconds.  Went to the softball game & although they battled, too many errors were the downfall.  Then went to the opening night of "Footloose" at school and it was fantastic as usual.  Katie Wilson does an amazing job with these kids and they are so talented!  Great job to the whole cast & crew!

Forgive me as I am exhausted and just need to get some sleep!  Hope you have a great weekend & there is a great event going on at CCHS tomorrow: Military Salute Day/Night.  2 LAX games Girls @ 4:45 pm and Boys @ 7:00 pm with the salute in between, including the Navy Leap Frogs!  Should be fun and cool!

Totally fell asleep last night before I could put in this entry!  Stopped at BP and got to see my good friend Jack!  Always great to see the man, the myth!

Today I ran 8.29 miles in 79 minutes & 10 seconds.  Ran a little slower today so my hammy's are actually doing better.

I know that I mentioned that our school is going 1 to 1 next year with the iPad 3.  One of the great things that might be available is Khan Academy's new software that is being piloted right now.  Check out the 60 minutes piece about flipping the classroom and the Kahn himself, pretty cool!

March 21st, Wednesday

Today I forgot my Garmin at home so I decided to come home & run at Lake Murray.  Forgot about all the traffic from SCLL and the Bobby Soxers too.  I ran 6.51 miles in 57 minutes & 49 seconds.  For some reason I run WAY too fast there!  I need to take it easy if I'm going to make it another 9 + months.

This has to be my favorite time of year, March Madness, Spring Training, NHL playoffs, & although normally I could care less about the NBA but now that the Clippers are starting to play better...

Did I forget track & field?!?!  Just finished watching the US indoor finals and now it is time to rev up for the Olympics!  Here's a little teaser in case you are a fan.  I like to run but I would LOVE to run if I could run like these guys!

March 20th, Tuesday

Good evening all!  I want to ask all of you to say a prayer tonight for one of the most incredible young ladies I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  She is an Ambassador at CCHS, a group I have been moderating for the past 7 years.  You can see her whole story here:
http://www.tehyathon.com/2011Tehyathon_HTML/main_2011_tehya.html
Just recently she has been having a tough go of it and spent the last 4 days in the hospital.  For everything this amazing little girl has gone through, she manages to keep the most positive and upbeat attitude and you would never know anything was wrong physically with her.  What an inspiration for us all!

I ran thinking about her today, 8.20 miles I think in about 77 minutes and 8 seconds. and how I can do something for her.  Whne you go to her site at the link above, look into her tenderness totes that she puts together for the homeless.  Next time you stay at a hotel, bring some of those items back and she will put them to good use!

The last thing I will tell you about her is that she was chosen to have her wish come true from the Make A Wish Foundation and she turned it down saying that others needed it much more than she did!

We hope you feel better soon, Tehya!  This came to my mind on my run today so I thought I would share it.  We all need to make everyday count as we don't know what is coming up around the corner!

Trip to Vegas was uneventful, won a little money, drafted our team with my nephew's help and saw my folks along with my brother Gary and his wife Beth.

No running took place but that's OK.  I will be fine and the weather wasn't great for running with the storm coming in Sat morning.  Ran 7.22 miles today in 66 minutes & 37 seconds.  Felt pretty fresh as I should after 3 days off!

There just aren't enough hours in the day!  I need sleep and still have way too much to do.  I think I need some time management work because I am failing at it!

MARCH 15TH, THURSDAY

Again, I'm exhausted but will keep putting something here.  I can't say this enough, thanks to all the wonderful people who ask me how it is going, how many miles have I completed, am I still on pace, etc.  I truly need all the help I can get to keep this momentum going.  Today I ran 7.64 miles in about 73 minutes + and it went ok.  Still nursing the hamstrings & knees are beginning to feel it a bit too.

I will be taking tomorrow off as I drive to Vegas for our annual fantasy baseball draft.  I need to start flying as the time issue is not good but I always forget to book a ticket in time!  Hope to run The Strip on Sat am and then going to have brunch with my parents and my brother Gary & his wife Beth.  Not sure if my niece Brittany will be there or not.

Today, I have another quote for you to ponder.  This one is from David Bly.  I liked it because from the outside, this might not seem too difficult of a task, but as I am not a "runner" per say, I leave you with this:

"Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted"

I would change that for my students saying it is like trying to get an A on the test without reading the book!  Good night and have a great weekend!  Not sure when my next post will be but I can't wait to see my folks!!!  The King is down below if you need your fix!

Quick one tonight!  Ran 10.3 miles combining the east & west 56 runs for a little extra distance!  I think it was around 98 minutes.

Here is another shirt design by my friend John in Michiana.  Love this one!

For some reason I feel like I put this up already but if I did, enjoy it again!  I have now run through Flagstaff, AZ to the east and up through San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, & Mountain View to the north.  Can't wait to see where else I can virtually go!

I didn't think I would be that sore after the 1/2 with all the running I have been doing but my good hamstring was really sore on Monday so I took the day off.  Still sore today but ran anyway, a little painful but I managed 6.62 miles in 62 minutes & 46 seconds.

Might run the 15K Hot Chocolate run on the 25th and thinking about the Animal Park half and Rock & Roll half too.  If anyone is running these or wants to run them, let me know.

Finally getting some shirt ideas together so I thought I would share them here.  First, my niece, Lelia, who made the awesome flyers for me also put together some very clean shirt designs that you will find below.  Simple ideas but I really like how they look!

Here is one anyway, the 2012 in 2012 won't upload for some reason.  You get the idea, I will be putting more up soon.

Excited for March madness starting tomorrow but have had no time to even look at stuff to help me fill out a bracket, might be for the best!  Did I mention I am now over 1/5 of the way done!  Yes!!!!!

Good luck to all and GO Irish!

March 11th, Sunday

Hi all!

Today was my first major organized run, (>5K) the inaugural SD half marathon.  Ran it with my friend Gary Remiker who was running his 1st half.  We finished in 2:16:30 which was a great 1st effort (& with out his bathroom stop, he would have broken the 2:15 mark!)  I ran around in circles during said break and got an extra quarter mile in!

The course was great starting at PetCo downtown, going along the harbor, through NTC, around MCRD, up Washington St. into Hillcrest, along Balboa Park back down 6th (going down instead of up like the AFC half!) and then finishing in PetCo Park about where 3B is.  The weather couldn't have been better either, overcast & cool!

Here we are with my friend Jen from Uni (who we ran the end with) cruising down 6th Ave about mile 11.  Great day and added 13.38 miles!

Hope everyone who ran today had as great a time as we did.  Might be doing the Wild Animal Park half next.  Have a great Sunday!  Over 20 miles ahead of schedule now!

March 9th, Friday

Hi everyone!

Did a late run, due to traffic on the 15, at Lake Murray today.  I basically was racing the sun to get done before it got dark as there are no real lights on the lake!  I made it out alive as I cut the run a little shorter than I would have liked.  6.11 miles in 53 minutes & 26 seconds.  Much faster than I would have liked just a day before a half marathon but not the end of the world!

The Madness is beginning!  The Irish got blown out by a good Cardinal team but should at least make the tourney, SDSU is in the MW final vs. New Mexico, UCSB is in the Big West final vs. Long Beach St. for the 3rd straight time, lets hope we can repeat the results of the last 2 years!  Gotta love March, college hoop tourney and baseball getting rolling!

Watching the Padres episode on 30 Clubs in 30 Days on the MLB network and it reminded me of a guy who I used to hate on the St. Louis Cardinals because he always would find a way to beat "my Padres".  But alas, he became a Padre and it was great not having to play him!  He won the World Series MVP in '06, 2 time World Series Champ, 2 time All-Star, & multiple Heart & Hustle awards from his teammates all at 5'7"!  Here's a little video telling how he did it:

We are now down to less than 300 days left to get this done, but we are in good shape being roughly 17 miles ahead of pace!  Today was 6.7 miles on the east 56 route and I was trying to get back to see the 2nd half of the girls soccer game, round 2 of the SoCal Regionals.  Unfortunately, the end result was not good, lost it in OT 3-2.  They had a fantastic season and should be very proud!

Getting ready to run my 1st half marathon of the year on Sunday with Gary Remiker.  Should be fun, it is a brand new one, SD half marathon that circles downtown and finishes in PetCo Park.  Come cheer us on if you have the chance!

Hi all, back from a day off to rest the legs & feeling pretty good.  Ran 7.00 miles in 64 minutes & 4 seconds, with a little knee pain setting in.  Got some good ice on them so hopefully won't be cronic.  The legs did feel pretty fresh though as I ran a little faster than normal.  Getting ready for the SD half marathon on Sunday.  Running with Gary Remiker our fearless Math dept. leader and baseball coach.  Should be fun!

Boys hoop team won their opening round game in the state tourney, 65-57 against a tough Palm Desert team that played a lot like us!  We trailed most of the game but took control when it counted!  Great job guys!

I want you all to join me in some special prayers & thoughts for my Mom & Dad as they are going through an especially difficult time right now.

Here's my quote for you today, says it is an old saying but very appropriate for me:

These day 5's are getting tougher & tougher!  Right quad was really tight today but made it 7 miles in 66 minutes and 45 seconds doing the 56 west run to the horses and back.  Looking forward to a day off tomorrow and will enjoy the Dons baseball team's home opener.  It will be Gar Millay Day to honor one of the best players to ever wear a Dons uniform.  You might recall (if you are a loyal reader!) I mentioned earlier that he was taken from us from brain cancer much too soon.

The Lady Dons will also be hosting the 1st round of the SOCAL regional soccer playoffs, hot off their CIF championship on Sat. @ 4 PM tomorrow at Manchester Stadium vs. Citrus Valley.

The boys hoop team will be taking on Palm Desert on Wed. night at 7 PM after their great come from behind victory over Mission Bay Sat. for their CIF Championship.  Here are some more highlights I found:

March fourth!  That's what a former student told me today via Facebook today and so I did!  She is going to be at Annapolis next year getting ready to serve our country along with many other former students.  I was going to run 8-9 today but I decided to "March Forth" and do 10 in honor of all our military personnel but especially those who I know from Cathedral.  Thanks Frankie for reminding me to be thankful for all you do for us!

I ran 10.01 miles around east Mission Bay from Ski Beach in 92 minutes & 43 seconds.  Saw a mini parade of choppers going down Ingraham St.  Reminded me of Wheelie & the Chopper Bunch, an old cartoon from my childhood.  Can't help sharing this one:

March 3rd, Saturday

Early wake-up call today to get my run in before a long, but fun day of CIF championship games.  I ran at Lake Murray, which always brings back memories of my childhood.  Before I turned 8, we moved within a block of the northern tip of the lake.  I played all my little league baseball games a stone's throw from the west end of the lake.  (San Carlos Little League, where I played against Eric Karros, former star of the LA Dodgers)

Today, I ran 6.42 miles in 56 minutes & 2 seconds.  A little too fast but I definitely tend to run faster when it's cold outside!  I am icing tonight to hopefully keep my right hamstring in one piece.

The games today were a mixed bag.  I saw most of the 2nd half of the girl's soccer game that started at 8:30 AM!  It was very one sided with the final being 4-0.  The best part was seeing Tara  Young score the last goal who is one of my Ambassadors! Next up was the boys soccer game vs. Saints, our big cross-town rival.  We led 1-0 until about 6:00 to go in the 2nd half and ST. Augustine scored on a ball that just broke the plane of the goal before a non-goalie player kicked it out to mid field.  It came down to penalty kicks and they were all made except our 3rd try that went off the post!  Tough way to lose a championship!

Lastly, our boys hoop team played Mission Bay, who we split the regular season 2 games we played against them as they are in our league.  We came out of the blocks very slowly, down 10-3, and 18-10 at one point.  The Dons pulled within 2 to make it 32-30 at the half.  Back & forth we went, leaving the Dons in the lead 47-45 after the 3rd qtr.  It was nip & tuck the rest of the way and it came down to the Dons being down by 1 with 0:06.9 seconds left.  The ball was in-bounded to Michael Rosenburg who dribbled up to half court, passed off to Brandon Michel who drove to the hoop, scored the basket and was fouled.  With 0:01.9 seconds left, Brandon missed on purpose got the rebound & time ran out for a 65-64 win!  What a game & my heart can't take any more!  Great job by all of our athletes!  I learned so much about life through athletics and I know our students do & will continue to do so as well.

Sorry for rambling, hope you have a great weekend.  My Ambassador interviews start this week so my posts will be a little short as my time will not be my own!  Wish me & my team luck!

What a cool day in history!  50 years ago today Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game in Hershey, PA of all places!  Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was born 108 years ago (could you imagine the world without his lyrical moral story telling?)

Here is a quote from Dr. Seuss:

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!”

Here is also a little video for you to remember how wonderful Dr. Seuss is!

I ran the same run as yesterday to try and finish in time to see some of the track meet.  Definite potential there!  6.52 miles in 61 minutes & 18 seconds.

Time for bed, early & long day for the Dons with 3 CIF championship games and an early run to make it to Mater Dei for soccer!  Roll Dons & good night!

March 1st, Thursday

A new month, a new outlook!  I decided to try out my hamstring and it worked out alright.  I started slow & by the time I was done, I felt better than I deserved to feel!  6.52 miles in 60 minutes & 54 seconds.  Happy to be on the road again!

Got to get more sleep, that's for sure!  Eating has been going good for these past 2 months, lots of salads, chicken, bran muffins, & instant breakfasts!

Can't wait for the Madness to begin!  College hoop seems to get better every year even with all the young kids going to the NBA early.  While I'm on the topic, here is quote from one of my favorite coaches:

"Imagination has a great deal to do with winning."

Most people either love Duke or hate Duke but you have to respect Coach K either way!

February 29th, Wednesday

So much for my extra day of running!  My hamstring is not good and so I thought I would give it an extra day of rest this week with lots of icing & stretching.  My total for February was 172.4 miles, beating January's total of 168.64.

I have to remember that this is a long journey and tearing up my hamstring on leap day is not going to be conducive to completing my task!  One gift I was given is a decent amount of patience.  I can always stand to use it better, especially in my classroom!  I'm keeping everything in perspective and listening to my body.

Again, thank you all for your support, it means the world to me!  I look forward to being back on the running road and progressing toward 500!  I wish you all a wonderful March full of the best kind of Madness!
